Hi parents and Grade 5 Students,
The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD) has provided a web site called Learning at Home: Good at Learning - Good at Life. This website can be accessed at www.nlesd.ca or using http://learningathome.nlesd.ca
This site provides many opportunities to engage in both on-line and off-line activities. One very important topic I needed to cover with students in mathematics before the school year ended was division, including long division. If students visit the link to KHAN ACADEMY and go to the grade 4 section (Yes, Grade 4 and not grade 5), they will find many examples and practice questions relating to division.
Parents and students do not need to limit themselves to this resource provided by the NLESD. A simple Google search of most topics will provide many excellent resources to help students, including some very helpful videos. You do not need to limit your learning to math and language arts. Play around with science or art for example, there are lots of interesting things out there.
Students should still find some time to read on a daily basis. This could be some of you own storybooks or something that interest you from a Google search. As well, students should do some writing each day. Maybe you could set up a journal tracking a few interesting things you do while away from school. Hopefully before this school year ends we will get together and you can share you experiences with me.
Do not worry about all this school work - simply try your best to do at least a few things each day (keep that brain from getting rusty!).
Stay safe, wash your hands often, and practice good social distancing.
Hope to see all of you again soon,
Mr. Hammond
